“Defeat the Damp” project
St. Peter’s churchyard slopes gently down from north-west to south-east. The proposed scheme is to install a ‘French Drain’ along the full length of the north side of the tower and nave, and around the vestry and chancel. The ground-water will drain into a soak-away, constructed under the path between the lychgate and the south porch. The gulleys on either side of the south porch will also be connected to this soak-away. This system will lower the water table near the church, which should result in less moisture in the walls and floors.
We have been granted a faculty for the work, and have received significant funds from four parishioners. We are seeking support from various grant-giving institutions, and are launching a general appeal from within the parish.
